Each
week, the students and I focus on 5 word wall words from the
high frequency lists that Hillcrest teachers have put together. I am so proud to report that
this year, most of the students are also able to spell these
words on their spelling tests.

The Word Wall
is primarily made up of high-frequency words. They are the
words students encounter most frequently in their reading
and need most often in their writing. Each week 5 new words
are introduced. We practice reading and spelling these new
words and then they're placed on the word wall. The children
are held accountable for the correct spelling of these
words.
The Word Wall will also have some word family words. These
are words that are used to help children to spell and write
other words with the same spelling pattern; for example, the
word fun can be used to write run, bun, gun, sun, etc. On
our Word Wall, these transfer words have a red dot.
During
the Word Study block, we practice word wall words, patterned
words, and any other words that will help the students become
better readers and writers. Using the dry erase boards
are our favorite way to practice, but we also use small
letters, magnetic letters, and good old fashioned scratch
paper! |
